A mid-twentieth century tabletop valve radio featuring a rectangular wooden cabinet with a high-gloss veneer finish. The front of the unit is dominated by a woven gold-tone speaker grille, which bears the maker’s name PHILCO in raised red lettering on the left side. A circular brass-rimmed aperture in the upper right of the grille houses a magic eye tuning indicator tube. Below the speaker is a multi-band glass tuning dial displaying frequency scales for S. WAVE (Shortwave), M. WAVE (Medium Wave), and L. WAVE (Long Wave). The dial lists numerous international and domestic stations, including B.B.C. Home, Light, and Third programmes, Lisbon, Vatican, and Luxembourg. Three brown fluted bakelite control knobs are positioned along the lower front panel. A small circular aperture, possibly for an indicator lamp, is visible to the right of the central knob. The radio is supported by a continuous metal rod base. A white adhesive price or inventory label is attached to the glass dial reading £5.00, and a small blue and white BBC Radio sticker is adhered to the lower panel.
