An early 20th-century carved oak monks bench of traditional form. The rectangular pivoting top features two relief-carved foliate panels and integral end handles, designed to rotate and form a backrest. The top is supported by two lion-form uprights in a sejant position, which surmount a rectangular box-seat base. The base includes a hinged lid for internal storage and a further carved foliate panel to the front facade. The piece is constructed from quarter-sawn oak, showing characteristic medullary ray figuring throughout. No maker’s marks or labels are discernable.
