The pieces are modeled after figures from the Roman Empire, featuring legionary soldiers as pawns, rearing horses as knights, and rooks shaped as fortified towers. The king, queen, and bishop figures are represented by classical Roman personages in traditional robes and armour. The item is housed in its original silver-toned presentation box made of textured cardboard. The side of the lid is printed with the text: A Carlton Product Made in England. The interior features a red flocked plastic presentation tray with individual moulded slots for each piece.
