A rustic garden bench of slatted construction, manufactured from a softwood such as pine or larch. The design features a high backrest with three horizontal slats and a seat composed of five longitudinal slats. It is fitted with straight, flat armrests with rounded terminals, secured to the vertical uprights. The timber has undergone natural weathering and silvering from outdoor exposure. A recessed rectangular section is situated in the centre of the top back rail, where a commemorative or maker’s plaque was formerly mounted. A small metal tag is present on the lower front stretcher, although any inscription is not legible. One armrest appears to be a later replacement, as it displays significantly less weathering and a lighter timber tone compared to the rest of the frame. The construction is of a simple, robust utility style common in the United Kingdom.
Condition report:
The bench shows significant signs of outdoor wear, including heavy silvering, dark staining, and the presence of organic growth such as moss and lichen across the timber. The structure appears stable, though the wood exhibits surface checking and degradation commensurate with age and use. The left armrest is a later replacement. The original plaque from the top rail is missing.
