A glazed ceramic fruit basket centrepiece, likely of Italian origin and produced in the mid-20th century. The circular form features openwork woven latticework sides and a central twin-strand rope-twist handle. The basket is filled with a fixed assortment of lifelike ceramic fruits and foliage, including a green apple, a large red fruit, a purple plum, a yellow banana, and several small red cherries with metal wire stalks. The piece is finished with hand-painted polychrome glazes. No maker’s marks, factory stamps, or incised characters are visible on the exterior surfaces. This style of decorative ceramic is closely associated with Italian potteries such as those in the Bassano and Capodimonte traditions.
